  4. Welcome to the Congo Release Notes.  This file contains important 
  5. information that supplements the Congo User Manual.  Please see the 
  6. Congo User Manual for game information and installation instructions.

  19. 1.    SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  20.  
  21. In order to run Congo, your computer must be at least a 486/66Mhz PC 
  22. or compatible with 8MB of system memory (RAM), Windows 3.1x or 
  23. newer, a Local Bus (VLB) graphics adapter capable of displaying at least 
  24. 256 simultaneous colors, a digital sound adapter, a double speed (x2) 
  25. CD-ROM player, and a mouse or other pointing device.
  26.  
  27. You must have WinG installed to run Congo.  The Congo Setup 
  28. program will install WinG for you.  If you try to run Congo without WinG, 
  29. you will hear sound but the screen will be blank. 
  30.  
  31. When the game begins, Congo checks to make sure that your system is 
  32. adequately configured.  If a required component is missing, a list of the 
  33. missing pieces will be displayed:
  34.  
  35. Available digital sound device
  36. Either the computer does not have a sound adapter installed, it is 
  37. improperly configured, or it is in use by another program.
  38.  
  39. Video adapter that supports at least 256 colors
  40. A 16 color VGA adapter is not adequate for playing Congo.  If your 
  41. display can be configured to display 256 simultaneous colors, do so and 
  42. restart Congo.
  43.  
  44. Multimedia timer
  45. This message will appears when either you are running too many 
  46. applications or when Windows is improperly installed.  If no other 
  47. applications are running you may need to reinstall Windows.
  48.  
  49. 8 Megabytes of installed system memory
  50. Congo requires at least 8 MB of installed RAM.  If this message appears 
  51. and you have 8 MB installed, you may have RamDisks or a large disk 
  52. cache that is using too much memory.  See Memory Issues, below, for 
  53. advice on freeing up system memory.
  54.  
  55. A mouse or other pointing device
  56. Check the Windows setup program to ensure that your mouse is 
  57. properly configured.
  58.  
  59. 2.    SYSTEM CONFIGURATION
  60.  
  61. For optimal performance, run Congo in 640x480 resolution, in 256 color 
  62. mode.  If your monitor's color depth is set to anything but 256 colors, 
  63. certain palette fade effects will not work.  The game will warn you on 
  64. startup if your display is configured incorrectly.
  65.  
  66. We recommend that you run Congo with 5 MB of free system memory 
  67. (RAM).  The game may run with less free RAM, but performance will be 
  68. poor.  If you have problems with memory, see Memory Issues, below.  
  69. The Congo Setup program creates a Congo directory on your hard disk.  
  70. Your saved games will be stored in this directory.
  71.  
  72. Do not open the CD drive while Congo is running.  Doing so will 
  73. cause the system to shut down.

  75. 3.    WINDOWS ISSUES
  76.  
  77. Although Congo runs within Windows, it behaves differently than other 
  78. Windows programs:
  79.  
  80. A.  Congo does not have a title bar with menu options.  Instead, all 
  81. game options are available on the game options screen, which may be 
  82. accessed by pressing the F1 key.
  83. B.  Congo cannot be minimized.  You must press Quit at the game 
  84. options screen to end the game and return to Windows.
  85. C.  Windows hotkeys (alt-tab, alt-esc) are disabled while running Congo. 
  86. D.  Congo disables all Windows screen savers during game play to 
  87. avoid graphics conflicts.  Screen savers will only work when the game 
  88. options screen is displayed.
  89. E.  You cannot run more than one version of Congo at a time.  
  90. Repeatedly clicking on the Congo program icon may cause the game to 
  91. begin running in the background, and the Windows color palette to 
  92. corrupt.  This can be avoided by double-clicking on the Congo program 
  93. icon only once.

  95. 4.    MEMORY ISSUES
  96.  
  97. Congo is designed to run on machines with 8MB of installed RAM, and 
  98. 5MB of free RAM.  If you experience memory problems while running 
  99. Congo, here are a few suggestions to help you maximize free memory:
  100.  
  101. A.  Do not run other applications while running Congo. 
  102. B.  Make sure 32-bit file access for virtual memory is turned off.  To do 
  103. this, open the Main program group, open the Control Panel, and double-
  104. click on the Enhanced icon.  At the Enhanced window, click the "Virtual 
  105. Memory..." button.  When the Virtual Memory window appears, click 
  106. "Change>>".  Make sure that the "Use 32-Bit File Access" box at the 
  107. bottom of the Virtual Memory window is NOT checked.
  108. C. In the same window, make sure that "Cache Size" is set to 512 KB or 
  109. less.  Use the arrow buttons to reduce the cache size.
  110. D.  If you are loading SMARTDRV.EXE in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, 
  111. make sure that you allocate no more than 512k.  The line in your 
  112. AUTOEXEC.BAT file should look like this:
  113. C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE 512 512 
  114. If you still do not have enough memory try remarking out Smartdrive.  
  115. To do this the line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file should look like this:
  116. REM C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE 
  117. E.  If you are running a RamDisk, you may need to disable it before 
  118. playing Congo.
  119. F.  If you are running Windows 3.11 (Windows For Workgroups), you 
  120. may need to turn off network connections.  Do not log on to the network 
  121. when you start Windows.  If you log on automatically, you can disable 
  122. this by opening the Main program group, opening the Control Panel, and 
  123. double-clicking on the Network icon.  Click the "Startup" button in the 
  124. Options section.  In the Options For Enterprise Networking section, 
  125. make sure that the checkbox labeled "Log On to Windows NT or LAN 
  126. Manager Domain" is NOT checked.
  127. G.  An 8MB swapfile is recommended for better performance while 
  128. running Congo.  For information on how to create an 8MB swapfile, 
  129. please refer to your Windows documentation.
  130.  
  131. Try these suggestions in combinations or all together to free up system 
  132. memory.  If you continue to have problems, consult your computer 
  133. supplier.

  135. 5.    SOUND CARD COMPATIBILITY
  136.  
  137. Some problems have been found when running Congo with the  
  138. following sound cards: 
  139.  
  140. Adlib Gold - does not support digital sound. 
  141. Ensoniq SoundScape S-2000 - Using this card with driver version 
  142. 1.20.00 may cause the game to crash.  Upgrade to driver version 
  143. 1.30.00 if you encounter this problem.
  144.  
  145. MIDI sound (background music) may slow down and go out of synch on 
  146. some machines.  This indicates that you have a slow disk controller, and 
  147. is not necessarily a problem with your sound card.  If this problem 
  148. occurs frequently on your machine, you can lower the volume of MIDI 
  149. sound using the game options screen.
  150.  
  151. 6.    VIDEO CARD COMPATIBILITY
  152.  
  153. Cirrus Logic drivers that come bundled with Acer, Compaq, and 
  154. Packard Bell computers may cause white "trails" in the video.
  155.  
  156. 7.    TECHNICAL SUPPORT
  157.  
  158. If you require additional technical assistance, call Viacom New Media

  161. have information regarding your system setup and configuration
